Let’s face it, if you’re like most people the cabinet under the sink has gotten wet many times over the years and needs repair. The fiberboard bottom has gotten warped, perhaps the veneer is buckling and, in the worst cases, there’s mold or mildew back there.

If you have a visible mold problem (anywhere in your home), seek the advice of a professional remediation company, who will do a much better job that won’t come back to haunt you at sales inspection time. It is much healthier for your family.

Here is a quick and easy way to repair water damage under the sink that won’t cost you a fortune and will last for quite a while.

Time: Approximately 1 1/2 hours

Materials and Tools

  • 1/4″ plywood
  • Several squares of peel and stick vinyl tile
  • Saw (to cut the plywood)
  • Wood glue, small finishing nails, razor knife

Steps

  • Measure the bottom of your cabinet
  • Cut a piece of plywood to fit.
  • Glue the plywood to the bottom of the cabinet and secure it with a few finishing nails to keep it in place while the glue dries.
  • Lay the peel and stick tile to the plywood bottom, being sure to cut the pieces carefully to fit to minimize any water leaks or spills getting onto the plywood.

Tips

  • You will probably have to cut the plywood in half to get it past the door divider at the front of the cabinet.
  • There are numerous YouTube videos about trimming vinyl tiles to fit, it’s pretty easy. Buy a couple of extra tiles just in case (the ones I use cost $.88 apiece.

The result will be a water resistant surface repair that is easy to clean and much more attractive.
